Virat Kohli compiled a composed hundred to help defending champions India begin the World Cup with a 76‑run victory over fierce rivals Pakistan.

Kohli made 107 and shared the century stands with both Shikhar Dhawan and Suresh Raina at the Adelaide Oval.

It was an emphatic way to begin the defence of a trophy they won on home soil in 2011 and represents their first competitive win since arriving for a tour of Australia in November.

The match had an estimated television audience of one billion, and extends India’s World Cup record against Pakistan to six wins.

Meanwhile, in the ICC Cricket World cup matches this week, New Zealand will take on Scotland at 10am tomorrow, Afghanistan will meet Bangladesh at 1.30pm on Wednesday while the United Arab Emirates will take on Zimbabwe at 10am on Thursday.
