An independent body which will facilitate the development of media outlets in the country has been established under the new Media Industry Decree, which will consist of a chairperson and five other persons.
Attorney General and Minister for Communication Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum said that they have appointed a chairperson and are now looking at the composition of the rest of the Media Development Authority.
Under Section 8 of the Decree, some of the functions of the Authority are to advise and make recommendation to the Minister on matters, measures and regulations related to or connected to the media as well as ensure nothing is included in the content of any media service which is against public interest or order, or national interest or which offends against good taste or decency and creates communal discord.
Meanwhile, some of the powers given to the Authority will see the Authority given powers to do anything for the purpose of discharging its functions and duties.
However, Sayed-Khaiyum said that the journalist to some extent is protected under the Decree.
