While political parties, candidates and manifestos are gearing up for the March 2009 elections, the second release of the Provisional Findings for the 2007 Population and Housing Census states that there is a marked increase in the voting age population.  

In a statement released this afternoon, Census Commissioner Timoci Bainimarama said that there are a total of 489,066 persons of voting age, who were enumerated during the Census.

This total is 9,392 more than those that voted in the 2006 National Elections.

The number of Fijians of voting age increased by 6,141 making the total 262,155, however the number of Indians decreased by 251 to 204, 219, Rotumans increased by 762 to 6, 135 while people of other races increased by 2, 740 to 16, 557.

The next General Elections is expected to be held in March 2009.
