There has been a 27 percent increase in the number of reported cases of rape and attempted rape.

Figures released by the Fiji Police show that there were 21 reported cases of rape in January this year compared to 12 in January last year.

In February this year, there were 7 cases of rape however last year there were three more cases reported.

Overall there were 28 cases of rape and attempted rape cases in January and February compared to the same period last year.

However, figures also reveal that there was a 67 percent decrease in the number of defilement of girls under 13 in the last two months.

Indecent assault cases also decreased by 40 percent while defilement of girls between 13 to 16 years decreased by 10 percent in the last two months.

There was a 24 percent increase in the number of cases reported against public morality in the last two months compared to same period last year.
