Increase in garbage fees for Nausori residents
This is after Cabinet has approved the Nausori Town Council's garbage removal and disposal by-laws 2010.
Cabinet based its decision on a submission by the Minister for Health, Dr Neil Sharma.
Dr Sharma said the existing charge levied by the council was in accordance with the Public Health Act that falls within Public Health Regulations.
It allowed the municipal authority to charge a maximum fee of $25 per garbage can annually.
He added the Nausori Town Council is facing new challenges in garbage disposal because of the increase in transportation costs to the Naboro Landfill.
The increase in fees will provide sufficient funds for the operations of the garbage collection service and allow for proper disposal of all garbage within the town boundary.
Dr Sharma believes that it will also minimise the indiscriminate dumping of rubbish and will pave the way for Nausori to become a "Healthy Town" under the "Healthy Island" initiative.
