The Health Ministry is concerned about the increase in the number of children being seen for severe diarrhoea.
Early cases histories are showing sever bouts of loose motions sometimes accompanied by fever or vomiting.
Health Permanent Secretary Dr Salanieta Saketa said the relatively short history of the illness and the sudden deterioration of the condition is unlike diarrhoea conditions seen in the past by the hospitals.
Saketa has urged parents to seek urgent medical attention if the child is becoming dehydrated.
She said dehydration can be easily and quickly reversed by drinking lots of fluids, including oral dehydration salts.
The Ministry has advised parents, caregivers and teachers to ensure that safe drinking water is available for members of the family and for schools.
If necessary all drinking water should be boiled.
