Increase in Overall tourism earnings
According to the Bureau of Statistics, tourism takings were $117.6 million for the first quarter of 2008 compared to $95 million for the same period in 2007.
This was a 23.8 percent increase in tourism earnings.
The people employed in the tourism sector also had a slight increase for the period from 8,739 to 8,958 workers.
According the Bureau, the hotel rooms available also recorded a significant increase of 130 thousand 291 which is a 18.1 percent increase.
Occupancy rate for the period dropped from 46.2 percent to 41 percent.
However, the Bureau of Statistics said the fall in occupancy rate was due to the massive increase in rooms available for the quarter compared to 2007.
The room nights sold was up by 5.1 percent however the total rooms available in the first quarter of 2008 was 848,280 compared to 717,989 in the year 2007.
