In an attempt to encourage more farmers to take part in the rice industry, the Rewa Rice Limited Board has decided to increase the price of paddy.
Chairman, Hari Pal Singh said in a meeting yesterday they decided on the increase saying it will encourage supply to rice mills, especially to the Dreketi mill.
Meanwhile, the Agriculture Ministry said that it is ready to assist farmers who want to do rice farming.
Information Officer, Vinesh Prasad told Fijivillage they have assisted farmers in Dreketi and Navua to do hybrid rice farming on a large scale in an attempt to reduce the import of rice.
Prasad added over 32,000 metric tonnes of rice is imported annually which costs taxpayers over $20 million.
There are over 300 rice farmers in Dreketi and about 40 farmers in Navua and the new price will come into effect on Monday and will last for one month only.
