The Fiji Saw Millers Association is raising serious concerns at attempts by local hardware merchants to import plywood and sawn timber into the country.
Association President Jay Dayal said they are concerned because there is an abundant supply of plywood and sawn timber locally and the Association will request the interim government to increase the import duty of these products which can be sourced locally.
According to the Association, there was an agreement between the Department of Forestry and the Customs that any import application for plywood and sawn timber must first be approved by the Fiji Sawmillers Association and a consensus reached between the FSA and governemnt that the local stock availability is not adequate before issuance of any import permit.
The Interim Minister for Forestry Joketani Cokanasiga is currently in the North and is yet to comment.
