The Immigration department has unveiled what it said is a major human trafficking scam in Fiji and has detained 12 Indian nationals and some locals who are now under investigation.
Director Immigration Nemani Vuniwaqa confirms that the 11 men and one woman, who are Indian nationals, are believed to have been brought into Fiji by a local company about eight months ago and they were staying illegally in the country
Vuniwaqa said the Indian nationals were arrested after raids were conducted in the Nasinu area yesterday.
Vuniwaqa said the 12 Indian nationals are now providing them more information about the scam before arrangements are made for their deportation.
At this stage, Vuniwaqa said they are now trying to ascertain how the passports of these Indian nationals is showing that they have been in and out of Fiji, when infact they have been staying in Fiji all this time.
