Every step should be taken to try to entice former Fiji citizens who have done well abroad to come back and invest in Fiji and move the country forward.
Immigration Director, Commander Viliame Naupoto has rejected suggestions by Ousted Prime Minister, Laisenia Qarase that the granting of Permanent Residence status to former Fiji citizens will have a negative effect on the people living in the country.
Qarase said the former citizens may come and take up the top jobs and several job opportunities may not be available to the people of the country.
However Naupoto believes otherwise.
Naupoto also said this new policy will result in a Brain Drain Gain for Fiji.
Naupoto said it’s all systems go as far as the implementation of the new policy to allow former Fiji citizens to have Permanent Residence status, is concerned.
Commander Naupoto said they are ready and the new policy will come into effect in 2008.
Meanwhile Former Prime Minister, Sitiveni Rabuka has welcomed the interim cabinet's decision.
Rabuka said this will attract those people who have migrated for greener pastures.
