Illegal Imported Items Confiscated
Director Quarantine Hiangi Forete confirmed to Fijivillage news this afternoon that these confiscated items have been sent to the Animal Health and Veterinary Department for analysis to confirm if it contains melamine.
Forete confirms that there are some milk items which are now being pulled off the shelves which are imported legally from China and consumers are advised to refrain from purchasing items containing milk and is made in China for the time being.
The Director Quarantine stresses that people should only buy food items containing milk products from re-known supermarkets until all tests are conducted and all illegally imported items are recalled and destroyed.
He also stressed that there are no powdered milk from China which is permitted to be imported into the country and if consumers come across such a product they must inform the authorities as soon as possible. The harmful substance melamine has caused several deaths in China as a result of contaminated milk being used to make various food items.
