The team from the International Monetary Fund has welcomed Government's moves to corporatise water, procurement and printing services.
After ending their two week visit to Fiji, IMF's Asia and Pacific Department Division Chief, Ray Brooks said this is a step in the right direction, as this will allow Government to redirect funds used in these departments to areas such as education.
When questioned if privatizing such services would result in higher cost to consumers, Brooks said in the long run it would be a better choice to make.
The team met with Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama, yesterday morning to present their recommendations, which also called on the Government to stop borrowing, and reduce its reliance on the Fiji National Provident Fund as a source of finance adding that reforms are also needed within the FNPF.
Brooks said the Fiji government must also shrink its current spending levels and shift its focus on reducing overall expenditure adding one way to reduce expenditure is through reduction of salaries and wages.
