ILSC refuses application by former lawyer
Commissioner John Connors in making the ruling said Singh's conduct fell short of a reasonably respected lawyer and the objective of the Commission was to hold the lawyers accountable.
In making his submission, Singh told the Commission that since the judgment was given last month, he has been without employment and added that he is basically "left on the road" as he has to pay $500 in rent for his office space and $900 a month for his new car as well as complete the construction of his house in Nausori, adding that his wife is now supporting him.
Singh also asked Connors to reconsider the $1,000 fine imposed on him taking into account his financial status and instead opt for a reprimand as he has not had a job since his conviction and cannot afford the fine.
However, State lawyer Virisila Lidise raised objection to the application as there was no evidence or financial statements showing that Singh was a destitute and affected financially.
Singh was found guilty of unsatisfactory professional conduct and professional misconduct by the Commission and told to pay $1,000 within the next 28 days.
