Methodist Church of Fiji President, Reverend Tuikilakila Waqairatu said he is not pushing a political agenda by preaching from the pulpit on Fiji to be declared a Christian state in the new constitution.

Although some members of the Dudley Church have raised concern about Reverend Waqairatu's sermon at their church last Sunday saying that he is pushing his personal political views, he maintains that he has said nothing wrong.

Reverend Waqairatu said the church has made its stand clear in the submission to the Constitution Commission.

He said historically, the constitutions in the country have changed over a period of time.

He said during the late Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara's leadership there was a constitution and then it was changed.

He said the same happened during Rabuka's leadership and the same trend occurred during Qarase's leadership.

He said now the current government is trying to bring in another constitution and the Methodist Church will continue to push for the country to be a Christian state as it has said in its submission.

Prime Minister, Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama has made it clear that Fiji will be a secular state.

This means that there will be no official religion and no religion will be given preference by the state, freedom of religion will be guaranteed and members of all religions will have equal rights to practice their belief and faith.
