Hurricanes centre Conrad Smith says the Hurricanes need to reconnect with their fans as well as play winning rugby in 2012.

The Hurricanes have lost key players Ma’a Nonu, Piri Weepu, Hosea Gear and Aaron Cruden after the troubled 2011 campaign which saw divisions between some players and new coach Mark Hammett.

A new and younger team remains and Smith, one of the remaining experienced stars, said the team has to focus on more than just victories.

Smith said winning is first and foremost and he would love to gain back a bit of respect from their supporters and even the players themselves to be proud and love the Hurricanes.

The Super 15 kicks off at 6.35pm next Friday with the first match between the Crusaders and the Blues at Eden Park.

At 8.40pm Friday, the Brumbies take on Force.

On Saturday at 6.35pm, the Chiefs take on the Highlanders while the Waratahs take on the Reds at 8.40pm.

On Sunday at 4.05am the Stormers will host the Hurricanes.
