Acting Police Commissioner Brigadier General Sitiveni Qiliho says he will ensure that police continue to work with international organizations to educate police officers on human rights related issues.
Qiliho says he knows there have been cases of alleged police brutality and the human rights training sessions will assist the Fiji Police Force.
The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights has encouraged Qiliho to pursue efforts to promote accountability at all levels within the Fiji Police Force and to prevent future cases of abuse.
The office says it looks forward to its ongoing cooperation with the Fiji Police Force.
The UN office says during his time as Police Commissioner, Ben Groenewald made extensive efforts to promote a culture of respect for human rights within the Fiji Police Force and to ensure accountability for past cases of police ill treatment.
It says that only a couple of weeks ago, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights delivered a training session on human rights at the Police Training Academy and engaged in discussions on concrete next steps to improve respect for human rights within the Fiji Police Force.
The office says this important work needs to continue.
