The commitment to human rights by Pacific Island Leaders will be the main topic of discussion at a consultation on the regionally endorsed Pacific Plan to be held in Auckland next week.
Over 35 members from 11 Pacific Island countries will join the five day consultation to discuss the integration of international human rights standards into national policy, practice and law in line with the Plan and their own national constitutions.
The consultation is organised by the Pacific Regional Rights Resource Team and UNDP in partnership with the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat and Commonwealth Secretariat, it will run from the 29th of October to the 2nd of November at Auckland's Copthorned Hotel.
In a statement released, RRRT Project Manager Sandra Bernklau said the " pledge" taken by Pacific leaders in the development and support of the Pacific Plan, endorsed by Pacific Island Forum members in October 2005, " sends a clear message that the region's leaders wish to be proactive in building a Pacific region respected for its defense of the values of good governance, democracy and human rights.
Chief Training Officer, Apolosi Bose said the consultation aims to help MPs.
The countries participating are Samoa, Solomon Islands, Papua New Guinea, Cook Islands, Tuvalu, Tonga, Vanuatu, Kiribati, Federated States of Micronesia, Nauru and Niue.
