Human Rights Council Not Needed
CCF Executive Director Reverend Akuila Yabaki said the Fiji Human Rights Commission cannot be removed as it is formed under an act of parliament.
Yabaki said it is also time now for the NGO Coalition on Human Rights to regroup themselves.
While some have shown their support for the former Vice President's call for the establishment of a Fiji Human Rights Council, there is still no word about the council's actual formation, its members and work it has or intends to carry out.
Ratu Joni Madraiwiwi in his speech at the Annual Pacific Co-operation Foundation in Auckland last month mentioned the setting up of Fiji Human Rights Council as the Fiji Human Rights Commission had not done its job to date.
When Fijivillage contacted the Bau High Chief to elaborate on his statement, he declined to comment and said he would just stick to what he had said in New Zealand.
The Fiji Women's Crisis Centre, the Pacific Centre for Public Integrity and ousted Opposition Leader Mick Beddoes have all come out in the media and stated their support for the formation of a Fiji Human Rights Council.
However, there is no word as yet on who is behind the move.
FHRC Director and chairperson Dr. Shaista Shameem has dismissed all talk of such a council, stating it was all rubbish.
