Leaders of the Arab League and Pacific Island states have agreed to establish a forum of cooperation and coordination as the first ever historic summit between the Arab world and the pacific islands concluded in Abu Dhabi yesterday.

At the conclusion of the meeting, a joint communiqué states that the two sides vowing to enhance cooperation in various areas and the Arab League has also vowed to open an office in the Pacific to boost trade, economic and investment cooperation between the two regions.

The Leaders and Foreign Ministers of the Arab and pacific island nations say the meeting was held in order to explore ways and means to invigorate cooperation between the two parties in the various political, economic, social and cultural fields, and to review prospects of future development of that cooperation.

They says the participants at the meeting emphasized their interest in strengthening friendship and cooperation between the countries of both regions.

The Communiqué states that the two sides have expressed their determination to steadily go forward with communication, dialogue, consultation and coordination with regards to regional and international issues impacting both regions such as shortage in food, water scarcity and climate change.

The participants reiterated their adherence to the principles and objectives of the United Nations, their commitment to maintaining international peace and security, equal sovereignty of nations, respect for territorial integrity of countries, non  intervention in the internal affairs of countries, peaceful settlements of dispute and the non use or threat of use of force in international relations.

The communiqué also highlighted the importance of strengthening investment between Arab countries and Pacific island nations.

Foreign ministers of 21 Arab and 14 Pacific island countries, including Fiji attended the meeting, with Australia and New Zealand participating in as observers.

Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama and Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed Khaiyum represented Fiji at the historic summit.
