As Christians celebrate Easter, Hindus worldwide are today also celebrating a religious festival. This is the "Festival of Colours" otherwise known as Holi to many.
Holi commemorates various events in Hindu mythology and provides a temporary opportunity for Hindus to disregard social norms and indulge in merrymaking.
On this day, Hindus spray friends and family with colored powder and water and generally go a bit wild on the streets.
Shree Sanatan Dharam Pratinidhi Sabha of Fiji's National Secretary, Vijendra Prakash said this festival helps people to believe in the virtue of being truthful and also to fight evil.
The legend commemorated by the festival of Holi involves an evil king who forbade his son from worshipping God however the son continued to do so.
Getting angry with the son, the King challenged his son to sit with his sister, believed to be immune to fire, in a burning pit of fire. The end result, the wicked sister was burnt to death, while the son survived without a scar. The burning of the wicked aunt is celebrated as Holi.
