There’s something gratifying about watching a Kiwi underdog take a big stick to a high-flying South African opponent.

That proved the case when the Highlanders humbled the Sharks 34-18 in Durban on Saturday morning, a result that could potentially set off a chain of events that causes mayhem among the so-called big hitters of Super Rugby.

If the Highlanders roll the bottom-placed Stormers in Cape Town on Sunday morning they could return to Dunedin with enough confidence to beat the Lions and set themselves up for a bold run to chase a position in the playoffs.

The Hurricanes lead the NZ conference with 26 points, the Chiefs have 25 points, the Highlanders 24 points, the Crusaders have 22 points and the Blues have 20 points.

On Friday, the Blues takes on the Reds at 7.35pm Friday while the Rebels take on the Sharks at 9.40pm.

On Saturday, the Crusaders take on the Brumbies at 4.35pm followed by the Chiefs and the Lions at 7.35pm.
