Higher Education Commission has powers to issue notice
Under the Higher Education promulgation, gazette on November 27th enable the establishment of the Commission which will be empowered to carry out a review of a University or degree awarding institution every 7 years, other Higher Education Institution every 5 years, and a newly established other higher education institution every 3 years after its registration and 5 years thereafter.
Following such review, the High Education Commission will then decide on the continuation or cancellation of the registration of an educations institution based on its findings.
All Universities and High Education institutions will be required to apply for registration through the Commission, which upon conducting the necessary processes shall decide on whether such an institute should be established in Fiji.
The Higher Education Commission will also have the powers to revoke an institutions registration and in doing so it must inform the institution of its intent and reasons, and give three months notice before the revocation is to take effect.
Meanwhile, it is also stated in the gazette, that any person who attempts to influence a member of the Commission and its staff, or persons directly working under the Commission and the Appeals Board will be liable on conviction to a $12,000 fine or a prison term not exceeding 2 tears.
