High school students are indirectly contributing to the economy, as nearly a quarter of a million dollars are being saved by secondary school students around the country through the MoneySmart programme.

This is according to the Ministry of Education and Fiji Development annual MoneySmart report.

In 2009, nearly a total of $250,000 was saved by form three students around the country with the highest percentage of 45% in the western division.

An average savings by a student is of almost $35 which has increased from $26 from 2007

Ministry Of Educations Director Curriculum Advisory Services, Nemani Drova said the programme is to instill in young people good financial management skills and independence that will benefit them in the long run.
