There is still a high number of rape and drug abuse cases that remain unreported, and we must find a way to help those affected.
Participants of a three day Training Workshop on Adolescent Health Development held at the Fiji Nurses Association Hall in Suva, were told that there is a marginalised group in society who have encountered some form of abuse, but have never reported the matter.
Coordinator Sister Sala Duvaga said one of the reasons for holding the workshop, is to ensure there are trained persons in society to offer counselling, as records have shown that these victims often fall onto the wrong side of the law.
Meanwhile, results of a survey conducted has revealed over 30% of students are sexually active whilst in boarding school.
Duvaga said in a joint effort between the Health Ministry and Nasinu Secondary School, a survey carried out with students showed many were getting involved in drugs, underage drinking, and many were sexually active, and what is more worrying is that all of this was happening within the school compound.
Duvaga said following the training of some students to carry out the role of peer educators, they noticed a significant change.
The workshop ends today.
