High court to decide on Shameem’s as intervener
Doctor Shammem told High Court judges in the case, Acting Chief Justice Anthony Gates and Justice John Byrnes today that she wants to act as an intervener in the case and wants to cross-examine a few witnesses. She said the Human Rights Act allows the commission to intervene in civil matters in court.
Doctor Shameem also revealed in court that she wants to submit another report to the United Nations before the 28th of this month as a sub committee of the UN will be held in mid October.
She went on to say that she wants to submit that report and the two previous reports to the UN on the events of December 5th
in the case where Qarase and others are saying that the tako ever last year was unconstitutional.
But Qarase's lawyer, Tevita Fa said the reports to the UN are prepared by Dcotor Shameem without the knowledge and approval of other members of the commission. Fa said this matter should be looked at on a later date as he said that they do not know whether they are in fact the Human Rights Commission or Doctor Shameem's own paper.
Commodore Bainimarama's lawyer, QC Gerrard Mcoy said that both the primary parties should be left on their own and there should be no intervention from the commission.
The court decides tomorrow on the role Doctor Shameem will play in the case.
Earlier today, Tevita Fa also told the court that he wants to get a Queens Counsel to assist him in the case and needs more time. The court has given him more time.
