High chiefs like Ro Teimumu Kepa, Tui Cakau Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu and Tui Namosi Ratu Suliano Matanitobua cannot be appointed as members of the Great Council of Chiefs for now if the new taskforce recommendations are approved by cabinet.
According to Ratu Jo Nawalowalo, a member of the GCC taskforce that reviewed the Great Council of Chiefs, their proposal is that chiefs who are involved in politics need to have a 5 year stand down period before they are appointed to the chiefly council.
Ratu Jo Nawalowalo said the taskforce wants to maintain the council's apolitical stance so that people have faith and trust in the chiefs.
However, former GCC chairman Sitiveni Rabuka said the law is clear on that and the review is a step backwards.
