Heffernan Wants Charter Rejected
Those are the words of Pacific Centre for Public Integrity Director Angie Heffernan who adds that right now the most important issue is the independence of the judiciary and this needs to be addressed.
And in a statement released on her New York trip, Heffernan said that even though the interim regime was given more than 30 minutes to explain itself at the UN General Assembly in New York over the weekend, the international community would never accept its justifications for the raping of democracy in Fiji on December 5th nor the robbing of its citizens of its democratically elected government.
Heffernan adds that despite the interim regime's "own twist of the truth" of the situation in Fiji, members of the international community were able to receive a more accurate account from credible and respected members of foreign governments, international agencies and civil society both in Fiji and abroad.
Heffernan has now called on the citizens of Fiji, particularly the provincial councils, religious organisations, private sector and civil society to reject the People's Charter, stating that the only Charter for Fiji is the Constitution and all the initiatives should be within the framework of the Constitution.
