A heavy rain alert is now in force for Fiji.

A strong wind warning is also in force for the land areas of Vanua Levu, Taveuni, Yasawa and Mamanuca group.

A strong wind warning remains in force for the land area and waters of Rotuma.

These are based on the indirect effects of Tropical Cyclone Pam.

Tropical Cyclone Pam which is a Category 3 system is currently located near 11.1 South 170.1 East or 1,050 kilometres North West of Nadi.

It is moving south at 7 kilometres per hour and is expected to be a Category 4 system by tomorrow.

Based on the current projected track, Pam is expected to pass to the far West of the country and we may have winds of upto 70 kilometres per hour.

Acting Director of the Nadi Weather Office, Aminiasi Tuidraki said on its current track, it is closer to Vanuatu than the Fiji group.

Tuidraki said Tropical Cyclone Pam is becoming so broad that it will bring a lot of rain from tonight.

He said the rain measured around the system is already about 200 to 300 millimetres in 24 hours.

Tuidraki said this would be the main concern for Fiji at this stage.

People have been urged to take precautions as Fiji is expected to experience the indirect effects of the tropical cyclone from tonight.

Heavy rain has started in some areas in the Northern and Western parts of the country.

We are on stand by and will bring you updates of any flooding.
