Only 16 per cent of the country's population live to 50 years of age while only 8 per cent live beyond 60 years of age.

This is according to Health Minister Dr Neil Sharma in relation to NCD's in the country while speaking at the Fiji Health Symposium.

Dr Sharama said that diabetes affects 18 per cent of both major ethnic populations in the country.

Dr Sharama added despite all the regional efforts to monitor non-communicable diseases and their determinants the country is no closer to achieving the aims and aspirations of these initiatives.

He said the gathering of health officials will contribute to a strategic change and form plans to realign common sense and primary healthcare with all the resources and drive all of society to achieve better health in the next 5 years.

The Health Symposium ends on Saturday.
