Health Ministry/LTA Begin Campaign
Those caught smoking in public transport will now be told to pay a spot fine of $50 and if not paid in 21 days time, the matter will be transferred to court and the person may end up paying $500.
At a press conference this morning, the Health Ministry's officer in-charge of the Tobacco Control Enforcement Unit Ifereimi Corerega added they have now put a recommendation to LTA to revoke the license of those drivers who are frequently caught smoking in public vehicles.
Corerega said they also caught seven students smoking in public vehicles this year and they have referred them to the school principals for counseling.
There were 126 people charged in 2007 alone and this year till to date, 99 people were charged for smoking in public transport.
The campaign will see Ministry of Health officers based at checkpoints with LTA officers enforcing non-smoking in public vehicles.
