Shortage of Medical officers including doctors in various hospitals will see the Health Ministry undertake a recruitment drive in India for the recruitment of medical officers.

Minister for Health, Doctor Jiko Luveni said shortage of doctors has been an ongoing challenge for the ministry for the past two decades.

She said there is a shortage of 28 Medical Officers in the ministry as of 30th April this year and most senior positions are affected by this shortage which is currently affecting the divisional hospitals of Lautoka, Labasa and CWM.

Dr Luveni said 15 vacant positions cannot be filled locally. She said that the retention of local doctors has been difficult and the reason for the ongoing loss of staff are not only due to low salary levels but also on the work environment mainly in relation to lack of staff.

She stressed that work stress and frustration will be reduced with the right number of doctors.
