Health Ministry doing all it can
Permanent Secretary for Health Salanieta Saketa in denying a report which said that Fiji is one of the countries in the world with the highest Diabetes rate said their recent survey done earlier this year, shows that 16% of the people in country suffer from Diabetes.
This is after a report was done by the Fred Hollows Foundation in New Zealand of 34 communities, revealing that 4 out of every 10 person in the country suffer from diabetes.
Saketa said this figure released by the Foundation is wrong, adding that Fiji already has initiatives in place that address the issue.
The Fred Hollows Foundation, which deals with eye care as a result of Diabetes complication, carried out a survey earlier this year in a total of 34 communities and reveal 40 percent of people in Fiji, who are over the age of 40 years suffer from Diabetes, with a third of the people surveyed not even aware that they had diabetes.
