In an effort to decide a strategy in controlling typhoid fever in Fiji, the Health Ministry and the World Health organization recently met with leading typhoid fever experts.

This was done to review the experiences of the vaccination campaign and whether Fiji should expand the vaccination to the entire population.

The Health Ministry said Fiji has one of the highest typhoid fever rates globally and could lead to deaths if not treated with antibiotics.

World Health Organization's Dr Jacob Kool said many patients with typhoid fever are never diagnosed and they do not get the best treatment

According to statistics released by the Health Ministry as of June this year there were 287 confirmed cases of typhoid with Keiyasi recording the highest number of confirmed cases.
