JARRYD Hayne completed the most industrious game of his NFL career as the San Francisco 49ers fell 32-17 to the Detroit Lions.
Playing his first game since October, Hayne completed more carries (nine) and receptions (five) against the Lions than in his previous six NFL games combined.
His efforts could not inspire San Francisco to victory over Detroit, but they have almost certainly secured him game time in the 49ers’ season finale against the St Louis Rams next week.
Hayne was a surprise starter at running back for the 49ers at Ford Field — a facility he toured twice while weighing up his NFL options in the off-season.
The former Fiji Bati player made an immediate impression with three carries on the opening possession, including a career-best 11-yard rush, that helped the 49ers to a rare first quarter touchdown.
By halftime, Hayne had rushed eight times for 27 yards - two more yards than he had managed in his previous six NFL games combined.
The second half proved a quieter affair, although Hayne did manage to reel in five receptions for a total of 20 yards, including a first down deep into the final quarter.
Hayne had completed just one reception in his NFL career prior to today.
He managed one more carry in the second half to finish with nine rushes for 27 yards against the Lions.
