These are the words of a Sigatoka businessman, Mahesh Prasad who is reaping the fruits of the hard work done by his grandfather, Devi who came from Nepal under the indentured system.
Prasad today relayed the stories of his grandfather, who faced numerous difficulties and challenges during his trip from India.
Meanwhile, the Chairman of the Nausori Girmit Council, Vijendra Prakash said people who were brought through the indentured system have contributed to Fiji in numerous ways and the current generation should learn from their hard work.
On this day, 131 years ago the first lot of indentured labourers arrived from India.
Between 1879 and 1916 some 60,537 Indians arrived in Fiji as indentured labourers.
In 1916, the Indenture system was officially abolished by Britain as the last shipload of labourers arrived in November.
This was the 87th ship that brought labourers to Fiji.
