The Sugar Cane Growers Council has written to the Sugar Ministry seeking assistance for those farmers in Sigatoka who will now have to supply cane to the Lautoka sugar mill using lorries.
Acting Chief Executive Sundressen Chetty said they are unhappy with the Sugar Tribunal's ruling to close the portion of the Kavanagasau/Rarawai tramline from Batiri point to Kavanagasau.
According to Chetty, it will be very expensive for farmers to transport cane from Sigatoka to Lautoka using lorries.
The Tribunal based its decision on the fact that there has been significant decline in the production of cane in the Cuvu and Olosara Sectors and there is no evidence that the production will increase in the future.
