The cabinet decision to grant a 12 month amnesty period for payments of outstanding rent on State Agriculture land leases and waiving of all interests would see a loss of $533,000 in revenue for the state.
However, Interim Minister for Lands Netani Sukanaivalu said further steps are yet to be decided.
Sukanaivalu said the recommendation was made by the Fiji Labour party for a six month amnesty period, but the interim government decided to extend it to one year due to the devastating impact of the recent floods on the farmers and the economic downturn being experienced in the country.
The amnesty period will include overdue rent prior to December 31st 2008 as well as the rental due in 2009. Cabinet has also decided that all interests due on outstanding arrears owed by the Agriculture state land leases as at December 31st 2008 will also be waived.
