Suva Grammar School's Boys team captain Remesio Lala has claimed their first Gold medal in the 2009 Coca Cola Games after he won the Gold medal in the Senior Boys 1500 metres at the TFL stadium in the last hour.
Lala had a close contest from DAV College who took the Silver and the Bronze went to St Vincent College of Cawaci.
Lala said his Gold medal win in the 1500 metres this morning, is a boost for his side as they aim to successfully defend their title tomorrow.
Lala said he has set the pace and it’s time for the team to deliver.
Meanwhile, things are not going right for the Suva Grammar School girls camp after their Intermediate Girls 100 metres runner, Mereoni Sinudamu was disqualified in the heats for a break start.
Nadarivatu also created the biggest upset this morning after bagging two Gold medals in the Senior Girls and Intermediate Boys 1500 metres.
Salote Naiula created the first upset of the day after she beat Noela Taqai of Suva Grammar School and took out Gold for Nadarivatu Secondary School in the Senior Girls 1500 metres.
The Silver medal went to Kinisimere Leitabu of Wainimakutu Secondary, and Bronze medal went to Filomena Tikoicawaci of Holy Cross College in Taveuni.
In the Junior Boys Epeli Batisila of Nakauvadra High School took out the Gold, the Silver went to Khalsa College and Bronze went to Kadavu Provincial High School.
In the Intermediate Boys 1500m, Gold went to Peni Keteiwai of Nadarivatu Secondary School, Silver went to Muni Chetty of Andra College and Bronze went to Kadavu Provincial.
Looking at the Legend FM Medal Tally, in the boys division - Suva Grammar, Nakauvadra High School and Nadarivatu Secondary have a Gold each.
In the Girls Division - Nadarivatu Secondary leads with 1 Gold, Wainimakutu Secondary from Namosi is second with 1 Silver and Holy Cross comes in third with 1 Bronze.
The first field event, the Intermediate boys javelin sees 22 competitors aiming to break the record set by Lautoka Andhra's Varayame Momo, who threw a distance of 54.08mtrs in 2004.
On Day one, 43 gold medals are at stake, 23 in the track events and 20 in the field events.
The 100 metres heats are currently underway. The finals of the boys and girls 100 metres kicks off at 6 o'clock tonight.
At about 12:18 this afternoon, the 400 metres start off, then we see the 200 metres heats at 2:10pm.
Eight gold medals are also at stake on the tracks from 6:30 this evening when the 400 metres finals kick off.
