The Fiji Indian Association in Wellington said the interim government's decision to grant Permanent Residency to its former citizens is progressive.
Speaking to Radio NZ, President Salim Singh said they welcome the announcement however he added that there are doubts that too many people will make use of it.
The interim government in its 2009 Budget had announced "Fiji My Second Home" Programme will allow non citizens to reside in Fiji on a multiple entry social visit and those who use this facility will need to satisfy certain criteria including a fixed deposit placement of $200,000 for those aged 50 and above and $300,000 for those below 50.
Former Fiji citizens also qualify for Permanent Residency status after making a payment of $3,000. These people can work and invest in Fiji however they will not qualify to vote.
