Government has assured executives of the Vatukoula Gold Mines of their support in the construction of a new power plant.

The construction of the new plant will provide balance to the production costs which largely are attributed to the Vatukoula Gold Mines electricity usage.

The Fiji Sugar Corporation will partner in the establishment of the production plant.

FSC chairman Abdul Khan welcomed government’s support and said the benefits to FSC will be enormous, reducing electricity costs and providing a use for cane crushing waste.

The project is expected to cost $160 million and will provide for Vatukoula, the Rarawai Sugar Mill in Ba and surrounding communities.
