Government officials and members from the private sector continue to work tirelessly to ensure that the old Capital, Levuka gets listed as a World Heritage site as soon as possible.

Minister for Local Government Colonel Samuela Saumatua said including Levuka in the World Heritage listing would be a big achievement and Government is committed to making this dream a reality not only for Levuka but for Fiji.

Colonel Saumatua said they are hopeful that the launch of the project will spur investment interest in Levuka and help bring back the commitment and energy that once made this town worthy of reckoning.

He revealed that a committee will be set up to monitor the developments in Levuka before and after its nominated to The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to be declared a World Heritage site.

Colonel Saumatua said they are currently working to make sure all the groundwork for Levuka=s nomination are met and an appropriate institutional arrangement is being looked at to manage the submission.

He added that a lot of emphasis has been placed on Levuka and that the Ministry is working hard to make sure that it covers all areas of the submission and by next year, the Ministry of Local Government will review the Levuka Scheme Plan.
