Purchase of fuel will now be closely monitored by government after Cabinet today approved the immediate implementation of a fuel card system for its vehicle fleet.

In a statement released today, it states the fuel card operates on a point of sale basis which will involve submissions of monthly invoice to the respective ministries and departments, which will enable Total Fiji Limited to keep tab on refueling and oil purchase for individual customers by vehicle number and driver identification cards.

The fuel card is not a credit card or a cash flow card, but it is a card to transact fuel and oil purchases for government and nothing else.

However, local purchase orders and cheques for fuel and oil will not completely disappear and will still be used in exceptional circumstances.

The system will be subject to review every quarter.
