The report on the 2009 review of the Fiji Media Council stated that government has no place in the regulation of the media.
The review conducted by Jack Herman, Suliana Siwatibau and Barrie Sweetman stated that government should encourage as far as possible, through existing membership of the Fiji Media Council, more active attention to press responsibility.
Fiji Media Council Chairman Daryl Tarte said the report had come at the right time.
However, Deputy Secretary Information Major Neumi Leweni said it’s the government who will decide on the media promulgation, not Daryl Tarte.
The review report further stated that the government through the Information Department had not fostered its relationship with the Media Council to the extent that it might have.
