Govt agencies on full alert
National Disaster Center Operations Officer, Anthony Blake reveals that they have activated the Military, Police Force, Fire Services, along with the Health and Works Ministries so that people can move to higher ground while it is still day light.
Blake said their national command center is already receiving reports that there are now a total of 193 evacuation centers set up around the country with over 600 people seeking assistance.
Blake stresses that people living in low lying areas have to move now.
He also revealed that with the system being upgraded to a Category Three Tropical Cyclone, people should not take this advice lightly as the DISMAC operations centre has received reports that five homes in the far North of Vanua Levu have been destroyed with reports coming in from the Lau Group that trees have already started falling.
Blake also said the Government Agencies have already been briefed as hurricane Tomas is expected to hit land early tomorrow morning and leave the country on Tuesday.
Blake said they have set up strategic response groups to assist people in selected areas in Vanua Levu.
At the moment, the Works Ministry has set up water tanks at all divisional health centers and also along the Suva Nausori corridor.
Red Cross has already set aside 24 containers full of supplies along with satellite phones after there were reports of damages to the antennas for TFL in the North.
