The Government Handicraft Centre which was set up in 1974 will see its current stock transferred to the Fiji Arts Council after a decision was made to close the centre as it has not been financially viable.

The decision was based on the submission by Industry and Trade Minister Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum who said that in the last 10 years it has not been performing well financially adding that the transfer of the assets to Fiji Arts Council will prevent the duplication of functions and wastage of limited resources.
 
He also said that the closure will also strengthen the functions of both the Arts Council and Government Handicraft Centre to ensure that more holistic in promotion of a bonafide handicraft industry.

Fiji Arts Council receives a grant of $120,000 from the Department of Culture and Heritage.
