The Permanent Secretary to Ratu Penaia Ganilau, who was Governor General in 1987, said Ratu Penaia totally opposed the military coup led by Sitiveni Rabuka.
Speaking to Fijivillage from Sydney, Peter Thomson said Ratu Penaia only found out that Rabuka took over the government when then Speaker, Militoni Leweniqila called him on the morning of May 14th.
Thomson also said the full support of Buckingham Palace and the advice from the judges gave Ratu Penaia a lot of strength to continue to ensure that a proper government was put in place in Fiji.
Peter Thomson also recalled the first meeting of the Great Council of Chiefs after the 1987 coup.
Thomson was releasing a new version of his book Kava in the Blood next month. Kava in the Blood is based on the events of 1987 and will include events in Fiji up to 2008.
