Good news for redundant workers of the Emperor Gold Mining Company as they are entitled to five months pay upfront plus two weeks pay for each year of service, as per the award of the Permanent Arbitrator.

The ruling was made by Suva High Court Judge, Justice Jiten Singh last Friday.

Emperor first made redundant several members of FICTU affiliates, the Vatukoula Mine Workers Staff in April, 2006. The dispute on the redundancy formula was referred to the Arbitration Tribunal, where they were awarded a sum of five months upfront and two weeks’ pay for each year of service.

Meanwhile, Emperor filed for a judicial review of the Award on several grounds and the High court rejected them all. FICTU general secretary, Attar Singh said it is a pity that the other union, the Fiji Mine Workers Union failed to take part in the judicial proceedings although it had a similar award from the Tribunal for its members made redundant in April, 2006.
