Give landowners time-Gavidi
Association President, Ratu Osea Gavidi said it is understandable that the sugar industry is targeting to get more land for commercialized cane farming but people also need to realize that the reserved native land is sacred for the landowners.
Ratu Osea said the interim government should just give time to the landowners to discuss the issue.
Ratu Osea said with the Great Council of Chiefs still suspended, the interim government should allow the 222 chiefs to discuss the issue and find a solution for the benefit of everyone.
Former Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka said de-reserving of native land is nothing new.
In an interview with Village News Rabuka stressed that land has to be reserved in order for development to take place.
However, he also mentions that something which is new in the report prepared by the consultant from India, Doctor M Krishnamurti is that the Mataqali's may not be consulted on the issue.
Rabuka adds that people should stop criticizing Interim Finance Minister Mahendra Chaudhry as he is just performing his role as the Sugar Minister.
