Every child deserves a second chance.

The United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) said that juveniles who face criminal charges should be given lighter sentences so that they can reform themselves and become better citizens once released.

UNICEF's Social Policy Officer Mereia Carling was commenting on the theme chosen by students of Cuvu College for Tadra Kahani whose performance will be based on the right to protection from abuse and neglect, and rights to justice for young offenders.

According to Carling, they are working with the Social Welfare Ministry to provide training to Magistrates, Police and other people involved in the Justice Ministry on ways to deal with young offenders.

She said some of the Juveniles who come out after serving their sentences are rejected and many employers hesitate to provide jobs to these people.
